Viral claim that NCP's Nasiruddin Patwary was attacked with a 'pistol' in Jhinaidah is false

What is the claim?

On Friday afternoon, 22 May 2026, National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary was attacked outside Jhinaidah town's Old Collectorate Jaame Mosque, after Jumma prayers. Within hours, a specific claim went viral across Facebook:

"Attack on Nasir with a pistol in hand in Jhinaidah." (Md Abdullah's Facebook post)

"Look — during the Chhatra Dal-BNP attack on Brother Nasiruddin Patwary today in Jhinaidah, you can clearly see this young man pulling a 'pistol' from his waist, preparing to fire." (Md. Mainol Islam's Facebook post)

The same post claimed that the two men circled in red in the viral video are 'Shibir terrorists' — one Siyam Uddin Turja (in panjabi) allegedly the son of a local Jamaat leader, and another Ashik (in T-shirt) allegedly a Shibir leader. The post called for their immediate arrest. The image spread to thousands of shares.

Verdict: FALSE — Why?

Every critical component of this claim (the pistol, the identities of the alleged attackers, the political affiliation of the people circled) collapses on inspection.

1. No mainstream Bangladeshi outlet mentions a pistol

Every major Bangladeshi news outlet that covered the incident agrees — no firearm was involved. The weapons reported were eggs, brickbats and hockey sticks.

This was a heavily covered event with police, eyewitnesses and journalists on scene. If a pistol had actually been drawn, at least one outlet would have reported it. None did. The pistol claim only exists in viral social media posts.

2. Patwary himself did not mention a pistol

Hours after the incident, Patwary posted a detailed statement on his verified Facebook page:

"First, eggs and brick-stones were thrown. Then they suddenly struck with hockey sticks. Three people had their heads split open and several others were injured. I and NCP joint member Tarek Reza were also kicked and punched. The attackers snatched mobile phones, cameras and wallets." ^[4]

Patwary — the victim himself, listing every grievance in detail — did not mention any pistol or attempted shooting. If a pistol had been drawn against him, this would be the first thing in his statement, not absent from it.

3. The two men circled in red are NCP's own activists

The individuals identified in viral posts as 'armed attackers' are in fact NCP and Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) activists — Patwary's own protective detail.

The Daily Star's report is explicit:

"Leaders and activists of the NCP and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement then reportedly surrounded him, placed a helmet on his head and protected Patwary from the attack." ^[1]

This matches an eyewitness comment on the very same Facebook thread that pushed the 'pistol' claim. Under Dr. Mahmuda Mitu's post (which used the line "Attack on Nasir with pistol in hand. Imagine that?"), a witness called Md Shifat Islam replied:

"Sister, these two are from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Please delete the post."

Daily Star's reporting and the on-site witness both say the same thing: the men circled as 'attackers' were Patwary's own protectors.

4. 'Siyam Uddin Turja' and 'Ashik' — no corroboration anywhere

Md. Mainol Islam's viral post named two specific 'Shibir terrorists' — complete with the names of their fathers and home addresses. These names do not appear in any mainstream Bangladeshi news report as suspects, attackers, or persons of interest. They are not in the police statement. They are not in the FIR being prepared.

Daily Inqilab listed the actual injured — all NCP workers:

"NCP workers Asif, Jahid, Al Amin, Sagor, Enamul Kabir and Mudassher were injured." ^[3]

One of the injured NCP workers is named Asif — which sounds similar to the alleged 'Ashik' in the viral post, but the name, identity, address and father's name are all different. This appears to be an attempt to relabel a real injured NCP worker as a 'terrorist' from a rival camp.

What actually happened in Jhinaidah

Here is the full, factual sequence based on multiple Bangladeshi news outlets and police statements.

1. Location and time

The Old Collectorate Jaame Mosque, located in Jhinaidah town's old DC court area, on Friday 22 May 2026, immediately after Jumma prayers. Patwary had travelled to Jhinaidah for a previously scheduled NCP programme.

2. Conversation in the mosque

According to The Daily Star, eyewitnesses said Sahed Ahmed, the convener of Islamic University Chhatra Dal, had been speaking with Patwary as both left the mosque after prayers. The conversation concerned Patwary's recent controversial political remarks.

3. Egg throw and attack begins

At one stage, a Chhatra Dal activist accompanying Sahed threw eggs at Patwary and attempted to attack him ^[1]. In Patwary's own words:

"First eggs and brick-stones were thrown. Then they struck with hockey sticks suddenly." ^[4]

4. NCP activists form a protective ring

NCP and Anti-Discrimination Student Movement leaders and activists immediately surrounded Patwary, placed a helmet on his head, and shielded him from the assault ^[1]. The men circled in red in the viral image as 'pistol-wielding attackers' are precisely these NCP protectors.

5. Clash with injuries on both sides

The situation then escalated into clashes involving brickbats and sticks between the two sides. Six NCP workers were injured — Asif, Jahid, Al Amin, Sagor, Enamul Kabir and Mudassher ^[3]. Three had their heads split open. Some members of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) were also reportedly injured ^[1].

6. Police response

Jhinaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Asauzzaman told The Daily Star that additional police were deployed and the situation was brought under control. NCP leaders went to the police station to file a complaint ^[1].

7. Chhatra Dal denial

Jhinaidah district Chhatra Dal general secretary Shahriar Rasel said, "No one from Chhatra Dal is involved in this incident." Islamic University Chhatra Dal convener Sahed Ahmed also said, "We have no connection to the fighting or egg-throwing" — though he admitted to being present ^[7].

This is the full sequence: a real attack involving eggs, bricks and hockey sticks — but no pistol, no shooting attempt, and no 'Siyam-Ashik' Shibir terrorists.

Conclusion

The attack on Nasiruddin Patwary in Jhinaidah is real. But it was an egg-brick-hockey-stick attack — not a pistol attack. Eight mainstream BD outlets, Patwary's own statement, the police statement, and the list of actual injured workers all say the same thing.

The two men circled in red in viral images are not 'Shibir terrorists with pistols'. They are NCP's own activists who built a protective wall around their leader. What's visible in their hands is most likely a mobile phone.

Before sharing any politically-charged image identified with circles and named 'suspects', a quick check is enough: do mainstream Bangladeshi news outlets say the same thing? In this case, none of them do.
